Hi There,
How fantastic is it that it's spring! The longer days, the warmer weather, lots of activity with people buzzing around and being busy! I find that for some people spring is the time that people start hitting the panic button after winter. This year, rather than letting yourself fall into the trap of waiting until the last moment to do something about your health and fitness (or worse not doing anything at all and then regretting it big time come summer), it would be a good time to remind you that you still have enough time to get in shape as long as you start NOW! Trust me when I say it's important to start now because if you don't all those social engagements and functions will pop up and make it nearly impossible to start - so be proactive and get moving today!
Christmas isn't that far away (in fact, from when Group starts up in October it will run for 10 weeks which is right up until the week before Christmas. How scary is that!), so I encourage you to make use of the extra daylight and the temperature and get out there and make it happen. I'm sorry to say that unless you have a PT that rocks up to your door, no-one else is going to drag you off the couch & whip you into shape, so it's up to you! Plan to go for a walk tonight after work, run around with the kids, go for a swim or a bike ride. In this weather the list is positively endless! :)
Wishing you great Health & Fitness
Lots of Luv

Article: Scales will make you FAT!
By
Amanda Woollard
Spring is here. It’s getting warmer and now is the time that everyone wants to quickly lose those winter kilos for summer. As a Personal Trainer it’s great to see people getting active and healthy, however I can’t begin to tell you how frustrating it is to see people getting caught up with what they weigh on the scales, rather than focusing on a healthy lifestyle.
I believe that scales are ONE of the many useful tools available to anyone who wants to lose weight. They keep you on track and accountable if you weigh in on a fortnightly or monthly basis (it's a great way to catch those extra couple of kilos that have snuck up on you!) However, for anyone that gets caught up and obsessed over a particular number that they want to see on those scales, I believe that it can be incredibly self destructive and will result in them failing to lose weight long term! B is for...Beetroot
Yes, fresh beetroot is still very much in season during early Spring and if you ask me, nothing beats a fresh beet (pardon the pun) for sweetness when it comes to vegetables. From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective beetroot strengthens the heart, purifies the blood and clears and tones the liver. For females, it may be useful in regulating menstruation and can ease some symptoms of menopause, particularly if eaten with carrot.
Beetroot also treats hardening of the arteries, arthritis and liver stagnation. They're loaded with potassium, magnesium, beta-carotene and folate (one of the B-vitamins). These nutrients can help keep your heart healthy and your bones strong. In particular, potassium rich foods help control blood pressure - so keeping your potassium levels up helps to keep your blood pressure down. Beetroot also helps to protect against cancer.
So buy yourself some fresh beetroot next time you are at the market and get boiling, roasting and mashing - or shred them fresh into a salad! Yes, they do stain your hands, but its worth it! Fresh beetroot has at least twice as much potassium and folate and other nutrients as canned beets. The greens/leaves can also be used in a salad or stir-fry (they're delicious), but since they contain an abundance of oxalic acid they should not be eaten excessively as this may inhibit calcium metabolism.
